Why Bloating Before Your Period Isn’t Normal

It’s common, yes—but that doesn’t mean it’s okay.
Let’s get one thing straight: just because every second woman you know is bloated before her period doesn’t mean it’s normal.
Common ≠ normal.
If you’re walking around in your luteal or menstrual phase feeling like a human balloon, gassy gremlin, or someone who can’t button her jeans again—that’s a sign your body is struggling with something deeper.

And no, this isn’t your cue to restrict food, drink only peppermint tea, or “suck it in.” This is your cue to listen. Because pre-period bloating is a red flag that your hormones, gut, or detox systems are out of sync—and your body is trying to talk to you.
Let’s unpack it, fix it, and help you feel like yourself again.
🚩 What’s Actually Causing the Bloat?
Estrogen Dominance - When your body has too much estrogen and not enough progesterone, it holds onto water, slows digestion, and inflames your gut. Hello, bloating.
Sluggish Liver - Your liver is supposed to break down and excrete used-up hormones. If it’s backed up (thanks, stress, toxins, and crap food), hormones circulate too long—and you get PMS symptoms like bloat, cramps, and mood swings.
Constipation & Poor Gut Motility - If you're not going 💩 daily (ideally 1–3x per day), hormones recirculate and your belly gets backed up. Gas builds. You bloat. Fun.
Magnesium Deficiency - Low magnesium = constipation, water retention, cramps, and sugar cravings. It’s one of the most common deficiencies in women—especially in the luteal phase.
Inflammatory Foods & Stress - Gluten, dairy, sugar, alcohol… and that 24/7 anxious hamster wheel in your brain? They all slow down your digestion and spike inflammation.
Here’s the Truth:
You’re not “just hormonal.” You’re out of balance—and your body is trying to course correct.
And the good news? You can fix it. With food, movement, minerals, and a little lifestyle magic, you can actually go through your cycle without the PMS misery we’ve been taught is “normal.”
What You Can Do About It
Support your liver with leafy greens, lemon water, garlic, cruciferous veg, and bitter herbs
Eat cycle-synced meals that shift as your hormones do
Poop daily (seriously, if you’re not eliminating, you’re recycling estrogen)
Move your body gently to stimulate lymph and digestion
Add magnesium—from food or supplements (and yes, chocolate counts)
Calm your nervous system with breathwork, sleep, and a little phone detox

Quick Fix Tips for Bloat:
Warm lemon + ginger water first thing in the morning
Avoid raw cruciferous veg—steam it instead (way gentler on the gut)
Eat slowly & chew properly—digestion starts in your mouth, babe
Try a magnesium soak or supplement—your hormones and bowels will love you
Let’s stop normalizing suffering and start normalizing listening to our bodies. Bloating before your period isn’t a life sentence—it’s an invitation to heal.
xo,
Kayla
